Music
Music - the Capel Way
At Capel Manor Primary School, music is an important part of school life. It is a subject
uniquely placed to promote the social, spiritual and cultural ethos of our school and support
pupil’s emotional growth. It provides us with a universal language through which we can
celebrate diversity and unity, whilst cultivating individual creativity, expression and musical
preference.
Throughout the school, children are provided with many opportunities to immerse themselves in
high quality experiences which aim to inspire them and foster a love of music, in turn,
increasing self confidence and growing their own talents as musicians.
Our Music Curriculum is detailed and progressive. As they go through the school, prior learning
is revisited and built upon to enable children to develop a growing understanding of how music
is created, produced and communicated; including through the inter-related dimension such as
pitch and tempo. Within lessons, children explore musical instruments and music technology as
well as developing their competence in singing and making compositional choices.
Singing at the heart of our school
We love to sing at Capel Manor Primary School! Music and Singing Assemblies are held every
week. During the assemblies, children get an opportunity to sing in Phases or together as a
whole school. Children learn to use their voices expressively and with increasing accuracy
whilst learning the importance of musical elements such as pulse, pitch, rhythm and tempo.
They learn a range of songs in unison and in parts which include popular songs in the charts as
well as songs from different traditions and cultures. Singing assemblies also provide groups with
a platform for performance.
Learning to play an instrument
We understand that learning an instrument develops children’s musicality, as well as their
physical coordination. It also promotes lots of our school values including creativity.
Within our lessons, children learn to play a range of percussion instruments, glockenspiels and
recorders.
In year 4, all children are taught to play the violin by specialist teachers: children are then given
the opportunity to continue learning the instrument. At the end of term extra concerts are held to
celebrate their achievements.
At Capel Manor we also have 4 weekly Rocksteady bands. Children learn to play together and
perform rock music on instruments such as electric guitar and keyboards.

Choir
Each year, we provide opportunities for children in Year 3 to 6 to join a school choir. We
rehearse at lunchtimes and work towards different events and performances such as participating
in the Enfield Choir Festival, singing on stage at the Millfield Theatre and singing at our whole
school Christmas Celebration.
Performance
Concerts, festivals and musicals are built into the Capel Music curriculum to ensure that all
pupils participate in a range of performances in their time with us. Feedback from the children
themselves show how beneficial these experiences are for our pupils:
“We showed a lot of teamwork when we sang “One Little Voice, because we had to choose who
was doing the solo and groups” Shireen
“I faced my fear in singing in front of people. Normally, I don’t like to talk in front of
others.” Maisie W
“We learnt how to correct the notes we sing when we weren’t sure.” Abigail
We learnt “where there were pauses, when you don’t expect there to be any” Lexi G
