SMSC, Values and Fundamental British Values

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural. All schools in England must show how well their pupils develop in SMSC.

Spiritual

Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.

Moral

Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

Social

Investigate social and moral issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the fundamental values of British democracy.

Cultural

Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

Values Based Education Quality Mark - 2024

Capel Manor was awarded the Values-Based educations Quality Mark for the second time in 2019.

On Tuesday 15th October 2024 a visitor will come to our school so we can achieve this accreditation for the third time!

Please remember to complete the Values Based Education Google form that was recently emailed to you.

  • We have received confirmation that we are a Values Based School. Our auditor, Tracey Smith loved our school and recommended us to go for the ‘enhanced’ accreditation next year. She wrote some lovely, positive things in her report such as:

  • “The staff are very settled and there is a tangible feel of an abundance of happy and positive relationships.” and “All staff tell me that teamwork is really strong here.

  • Friendliest school mentioned by visitors, who have told them that entering the school feels like walking into a warm hug. It really does.”

  • “The school’s climate for learning is happy, calm, and purposeful; one that promotes quality teaching and learning. It also radiates joy! Values are fully embedded in every area of the curriculum.”

  • and Mr Ioannou’s personal favourite: “From the moment I walked down the path and was warmly greeted, through to the friendliness of the staff in the office and then being greeted with friendliness and respect by the pupils, I could see this was an excellent example of a values-based school, with a strongly-embedded ethos build on Values-based Education. Every interaction I had with pupils and staff was positive, warm and friendly.”

Capel Manor Primary School supports the emotional and social development of every pupil through Values Education.  As a school community, we believe the vision and mission of the school should be based on a foundation of core values which are taught explicitly in lessons and through our weekly whole-school assembly. They are also, however, embedded into every aspect of school life. Our values are at the root of everything we do!

We have 12 core values: Teamwork, Respect, Resilience, Ambition, Creativity, Kindness, Honesty, Responsibility, Tolerance & Understanding, Friendship, Trust & Happiness!

Our values were chosen by the whole school community.

These values are introduced and revisited on a two yearly cycle - six in the first year and six in the second year.

Values guide our thoughts, show us how everybody behaves here at Capel Manor and let us know what is important in life.

Our values are at the root of everything we do!

This half-term's value is...

Respect!

Thank you to Mrs Green and year 6 for our lovely display!

Every year we participate in an online assembly to celebrate

World Kindness Day.

Last year we celebrated on Friday 17th November 2023. This year it will be on Wednesday 13th November 2024!

Here are some photos from last year's World Kindness Day Workshop

Our Values Champions!

Huge congratulations to Stephen, Annelil, Jodi & Harley

our very worthy Values Champions 2024!

Every year, two children from each year 6 are chosen to be our "Values Champions". These children have consistently demonstrated all of the school values throughout their time at Capel Manor. The winners receive a Values Champion Trophy and their name is written in gold on the Capel Manor Honours Board so that they will never be forgotten.

Our Values Mural!

Our Values Mural was created by classes when we first became a Value based education school in 2016.

You will find the images of the mural dotted around our school!

Reflection Time

After every assembly, we have reflection time. This is when we are still on the inside and still on the outside. We use an image of a candle to represent our reflection. The adult leading the assembly will ask the child to reflect upon the key messages of the assembly. We also have reflection time in class where we look back on our learning and think about the values that we showed when completing our work.

Thank You Assembly!

Every week we have our "Thank You" Assembly. This is when we thank children from every class for demonstrating our school values that week. They get a certificate, their photo goes on our display and their name gets put in the school newsletter.

Well done to all the children who achieved a thank you certificate from their teachers for showing one (or more) of our school values.

Fundamental British Values

The DfE have reinforced the need to “create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Capel Manor, these values are reinforced regularly and in many ways.

Democracy in Action

Voting for the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) and House Captains 2024

On Wednesday 25th September 2024, we voted for our Junior Leadership Team and new house captains. Everybody was allowed to put themselves forward for the election and the whole school voted following candidate speeches. They showed the values of tolerance, understanding & kindness.

Here are our new school leaders for 2024/25

If you would like to join our Values Working Party, please speak to Mr Ioannou.
