PSHE
PSHE - The Capel Way
At Capel Manor, we believe that Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) plays a fundamental part in enabling our children to have a toolkit for a successful life. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We follow the PSHE Association scheme of learning.
Value Based Education
We are dedicated to ensuring that Capel Manor is a happy, stimulating and caring place and we expect high standards of behaviour and good manners throughout the school.
Capel Manor Primary School is an accredited school for Values Based Education. Behaviour and attitude to learning is underpinned by our school values, making it integral to the success of the whole school.
We believe PSHE is successful when we support:
- Happy and positive relationships
- Empathy and compassion
- The confidence to make the most of our abilities
- Value and respect of diversity
- Respect for others’ rights to their own values and beliefs
- Evaluation (and appropriate challenge) of the opinions and arguments of others
- Leadership and presentation skills
- Strategies for managing influence
- Enterprise skills and attributes
- Skills for employability (aspiration, communication, creativity, goal setting)
- Taking positive risks
Our PSHE curriculum is structures around 3 Core themes:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World
The core themes are broken down into important aspects of learning
Our PSHE programme is delivered through a variety of opportunities including:
- Designated PSHE time

- Use of external agencies and services

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
At Capel Manor, we use ‘The Christopher Winter Project’ resource 'Teaching SRE with Confidence in Primary Schools' - which has been quality assured by the PSHE Association - to plan and deliver our Relationships, Sex and Health Education. We have RSHE lessons from EYFS up to Year 6. This programme reflects the recent developments in SRE and the Science National Curriculum.
We understand that different families have different opinions about when it is appropriate to cover various topics related to RSHE with their children. We have considered this and have therefore decided that this resource is appropriate for our children. Within this resource there is an increased focus on safeguarding/keeping children safe. The resource also encourages children to develop the skills of listening, empathy, talking about feelings and relationships with families and friends.
SRE is taught as part of the Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum and the Science curriculum.
Relationships and Sex and Health Education is delivered by the class teachers. Sex Education is delivered separately to Year 6 children. Parents can choose to withdraw their child from the Relationships and Sex Education element of PSHE, but not the Science topic of ‘Animals, including Humans’ which covers puberty and life cycles.
The RSHE programme is delivered during the academic year and we communicate with parents before the start date to fully inform how the scheme will be delivered. If you would like to discuss anything related to your child's RSE curriculum, please do contact us and we would happily arrange a meeting with you.
At Capel Manor, we also teach the NSPCC PANTS rule to our pupils.

- Use relevant strategies to build vocabulary related to class topics
- Articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions
